As a family retailer, we were dismayed to learn that every year thousands of poverty-stricken children receive not so much as a single present on Christmas morning. So our very own CEO Chris Edwards played Santa Claus earlier this month when he delivered £5,000 worth of gifts to local Radio Aire appeal Mission Christmas.
The appeal – run through Radio Aire’s Cash4Kids charity – aims to give presents to the 1 in 3 local children living in poverty who wouldn’t otherwise get any gifts this Christmastime. Once collected, the gifts are distributed to children through organisations such as Candlelighters, Leeds Children’s Hospital, Barnardos and children’s centres. Last year saw 18,000 vulnerable and deprived children wake up to a gift on Christmas Day after more than £900,000 worth of presents were donated.
Chris said: “Poundworld Retail is delighted to be able to support the Mission Christmas campaign. As a father myself, it’s heart-breaking to think of children in our region going without presents on Christmas morning. That’s why it’s so fantastic that Poundworld is able to give something back to the community and make a difference to these youngsters.”
Cash4Kids charity manager Lisa Sullivan said: “It is overwhelming to have the support of the Poundworld group, especially as Chris Edwards is a local Yorkshireman himself. These gifts will help make hundreds of children smile this Christmas and thanks to them we can help more children than ever before.”
